Don Broco at the Masonic

Technically it was Mike Shinoda at the Masonic, but I was going to two shows this night, so I only stayed for Don Broco. They’ve quickly become one of my favorites ever since the tour with I the Mighty earlier this year. The other show was 3OH!3 playing Want in its entirety, and that’s one of my all-time favorite albums. I would’ve liked to see Mike Shinoda, but priorities.

The tickets for Mike Shinoda said the show started at 8, so I got to the Masonic in San Francisco around a quarter til, but they had already started. WHAT THE HECK MASONIC?!

They were playing “Everybody” as I walked in. I’m screaming “WE ARE FUCKED THIS TIME, FUCKED THIS TIME, FUCKED!” as I walk through the venue looking for a good spot, instantly disappointed that I couldn’t see anyone else singing or dancing.

I was a little concerned for a minute that I washed my sports bras for nothing. (I take my t-shirt off and swing it around my head during “T-Shirt Song.”)

I pushed my way up toward the front, but soon enough I was looking around the venue for other people into the music. I had no interest screaming my lungs out alone. Eventually I found a small group of about 5 or 6 people toward the back who were just as into it as I was. Good.

I was shocked this was even an issue, honestly. Don Broco is SO GOOD live. I fell in love with them instantly the first time I saw them. The rest of this crowd should have, too. It was weird.

They played “Pretty” way early in the set. Every other time I’ve seen them, they’ve closed with it. This time it was the third song. They didn’t encourage a wall of death this time, which was definitely understandable, because the crowd was sad.

They also played “Nerve,” and this was the first time I’ve seen this one live. Sweet.

Frontman Rob Damiani made a comment during “T-Shirt Song” about us “whackjobs” (I think that was the word he used) in the back with our shirts off. (I was not alone! Yay!)

I talked to the little group of Don Broco fans after their set ended. They were all here just for them, too, and we all agreed that they need to get bigger in the states already. As long as they keep playing live shows in the states, they will get bigger. They’re amazing. There’s no way they won’t attract fans every show they play.

The set ended at 8:18pm. I was actually planning on staying for Mike Shinoda because I wasn’t sure I’d make it in time for 3OH!3, but that show wasn’t supposed to start until 9, and the venue was less than a dozen blocks away. Don Broco wasn’t planning on hanging out at merch until the end of the night, so I didn’t stick around.

Here’s some footage of Mike Shinoda’s set. I am a little sad I missed him.
