Anthony Green’s Avalon Anniversary
Anthony Green, frontman of Circa Survive and sometimes Saosin, is celebrating the ten year anniversary of his debut solo album Avalon with a tour playing the album front to back.
I had actually never listened to this album before seeing him play Le Poisson Rouge in New York City, but I was spending the weekend with one of my best [COTF] friends Niki, and she’s a huge Anthony Green fan, so I joined her at the show.
Verdict: I did not hate it.
Anthony Green’s a cutie. I’m honestly not sure why I haven’t gotten into Circa Survive yet, because I think chances are pretty good that I’d be a fan. His solo stuff was really good. After seeing him live, I decided I should probably listen to him more, solo or Circa, probably both.
Niki got a little drunk and cried a little. She’s so cute, and that made the show itself even cuter for me.
Most of the music he played (and I’m assuming most of Avalon) was just happy and cute (why is this the word I keep wanting to describe this show with?), but I liked the little punk thing he did for like 30 seconds.
The last song on the album is “Devil’s Song,” and he had the crowd split into two to harmonize. My half sang “We’re all in the same spot” and the other half sang “This feels like a nightmare.”
I couldn’t tell ya what songs he encored with, but there was a decently long encore (I’d say at least three songs?), and at least one of them was a Circa Survive song.
Overall, good night, good show.
I went to the bathroom before we left and saw a girl crying and her friends talking about how Circa shows are like family, but this crowd was mean. I did not get that vibe AT ALL. Everyone seemed nice where we were standing.
Niki: “I leave every Circa show injured. They’re not nice.”
