Brent Walsh at The Colony
Brent Walsh of I the Mighty and Kylle Reece of Demon in Me played a short three-show acoustic tour in California. I caught the Sacramento show at The Colony.
I’m not super familiar with Demon in Me, but I associate Kylle with “Africa” by Toto. Important things to know, obviously.
A guy named Adrian Bellue went on before Kylle, and apparently he was super good. I missed his entire set, but I did not miss what seemed like the whole crowd talking to him and complimenting him and asking how they can get more of his music. Well then. Shouldn’t have missed him, I guess.
The venue had a bar on one side and a completely different entrance to the stage area. I bought quesadillas at the bar so I could get cash back for cover. I was not prepared, but it was nice to have an option to get dinner before the show.
Brent opened his set with “Already Gone” off his solo album 7, and said he normally doesn’t play it live because he always messes it up. He kinda did mess it up, but it was still beautiful.
After “Already Gone” was “Free.”
He played two new songs, “More Lucky Than This,” and “Cloud Song.”
“More Lucky Than This” was written in his SongShop for his ex’s aunt, but he said he likes the song enough to keep playing it.
“Cloud Song” is about a child of divorce watching the clouds and thinking about his dad.
He also played two cover songs.
“I the Mighty never plays covers, so I don’t get a chance to do this often.”
Well that’s a lie because ITM definitely covered Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So” on the second Connector headliner tour when they blew the speakers out.
But at this solo show, he covered Nothing But Thieves’ “If I Get High” (again. He did that when he played solo shows last summer too) and… WHAT WAS THE OTHER COVER I DON’T REMEMBER AHHHHHH
He pointed his mom out in the crowd while he was onstage. Cute.
Kylle joined him to play “Typical Blues Song.”
“A Toast” was a fantastic singalong. And then he decided we needed another singalong, so rather than whatever he was planning on closing with, he changed it to I the Mighty’s “Slow Dancing Forever.”
He apparently had been planning on playing ITM’s “Sleepwalker” had his voice not been fucked. Was he sick? Probably. But that’s unfortunate because I love “Sleepwalker” and haven’t had a chance to see it done live yet. ONE DAY.
I’m not sure what all else he played, but there’s no way that was all of it. There were two new songs, two covers (I think), one I the Mighty song, and the rest had to have been from 7. I have no idea.
Have you listened to 7 yet? Do it. Don’t question me, just do it. Each song is completely different, but it’s all beautiful. Brent doesn’t play it live super often, but if you ever get a chance, go see him. I promise it’ll be worth it. It sounds like he wants to record another solo album too if he ever has the time for it. That would be amazing and I am definitely in favor of that.
