The Coverups’ Surprise Return
It’s been months since Green Day side project The Coverups played their “last” show. Then out of nowhere, there’s another one at the Uptown in Oakland.
This was the Coverups first show actually in Oakland, rather than Berkeley (/Albany). The Uptown is a bit bigger than the Ivy Room, and the stage is a lot higher.
Marnie and I got separated on the stage.
We’re so gay. I love us. We got a selfie anyway, despite the distance.
There was no opener at this show (maybe because it was planned so last minute?), just a DJ who was playing music that fit perfectly with the Coverups schtick.
This might’ve been my favorite of all the Coverups shows I’ve now seen. It was fuckin’ wild. Billie Joe was fuckin’ wild. You could tell he was having a lot of fun, and the entire show was just nuts. I’ve never seen Billie so… can I use the word wild again?
They didn’t prepare for the raffle this time, so they raffled off stolen things found on the street, like a stuffed dog from the sidewalk outside some other business, and a Bird scooter.
“It’s transportation!”
Someone (I think Mike?) sprayed beer on the crowd.
They repeated some songs up to three times in a row, and even by round three Billie was sometimes still having trouble remembering the words.
He ALSO spit wine at the crowd. Directly at Marnie, actually. He always sprays her with something, it seems like.
The first time they played “Neat Neat Neat,” Billie spent at least three minutes on the ground soloing.
He wrapped himself in a mic cord, destroyed a mic, and rolled around on the ground a lot.
He attempted to stagedive and was immediately put back onstage.
Me: “Don’t drop him, don’t drop him, don’t drop him!”
By the end of the set, he was walking up to other people (like Jason White and Bill Schneider) and trading instruments with them, mid-song mind you.
Jason Beebout made an appearance during their “encore” set, and sang with them on one round of “Jessie’s Girl” and one round of “American Girl.” I lost my spot in the front letting him pass to get onstage, so I ended up behind Marnie for the end of the show. If I’m gonna be behind someone, I wanna be behind her.

That last “Neat Neat Neat” was sans the super long solo we were treated with the first time. It was intense. That was a long set. I wasn’t sure it was ever gonna end. They were having so much fun. I’m okay with it.
Setlist with wine stains.
Here’s some of the Idiot fam in attendance.
