Great South Bay Music Festival

Taking Back Sunday and The Menzingers played a festival super far out on Long Island called the Great South Bay Music Festival.

I got the venue way out on Long Island at 4:30 (Long Island is FAR) with a completely dead phone. I found an outlet at a radio station’s tent and borrowed their power for a while. I kinda felt bad, but they let me stay which was v nice.

I got a frozen chocolate dipped cheesecake which was fun but also a lot.

The Menzingers

I went in the pit for The Menzingers. I LOVE them and this was my first time seeing them live. So amazing.

They played a lot from After the Party, which I obviously really appreciated, it’s my fave album. I def underestimated my love for it when it first came out two years ago.

They also played a new song, “Anna,” for the first time.

And “The Obituaries” which I LOVE.

Even the songs I wasn’t familiar with were still super catchy.

It was kinda sparse in the crowd where I was in the front, but everyone was obviously into it regardless. It seemed more like just passionately watching the band onstage rather than dancing. At least that’s kinda how I felt.

Really stoked for their new album and tour.

Glassjaw

After The Menzinger’s set, Glassjaw came on and I went back to the radio station tent to charge up more. As I was leaving the pit I walked past Hail the Sun’s Donovan Melero.

Me: “Donovan?!”
Donovan: “Hi.”
Me: “You don’t remember me, do you?”
Donovan: “I the Mighty tour.”
Me: “…yeah.”

I mean he wasn’t wrong, but he totally doesn’t remember me hahaha. Oh well.

While I was charging up, I thought Glassjaw was probably gonna play “Ape Dos Mil” soon, so I unplugged, and naturally, as I was walking back into the pit, Daryl goes, “This song is called ‘Ape Dos Mil.'”

I got way too excited for that song considering I do not. like. Glassjaw.

But Daryl seemed better than he did when he played with Coheed. Less bored, and therefore less boring. I don’t know, just more fun than I remembered. But I didn’t watch anything beyond that song.

I went to find more food before Taking Back Sunday.

Taking Back Sunday

Best. TBS. Show. Ever.

This was basically a hometown show for them. Adam talked about how he moved from North Carolina to Long Island to join the band.

He also talked a lot about how this is the 15 year anniversary of Tell All Your Friends.

I managed to find my friend Meaghan almost IMMEDIATELY in the HUGE pit right as they started playing. I was in the row right behind/next to her and just kinda looked at her for a minute before I tapped her to get her attention. We’d met a few times previously, but the first time I actually talked to her was literally the night before.

The energy of this crowd was just GREAT. I didn’t think the crowds on the Coheed tour were as good, and the Tidal Wave show was weird because no one knew the album yet. The only show that could rival it would be the one I went to with Biz in Sacramento, but they played Tell All Your Friends in its entirety at this show, so it just seemed… better.

I def lost some skin on my legs, so that’s a sign of a good show. Rough crowd, lotta moshing. I started some of the pits, and a very tall dude did also.

Tell All Your Friends was AMAZING.

Adam said “Ghost Man on Third” (I believe) was his attempt at being Daryl Palumbo.
