Monster Mosh
San Francisco’s alternative radio station, Alt 105.3, put on a (supposedly) Halloween themed show at Rickshaw Stop, Monster Mosh, headlined by The Interrupters. Stickup Kid opened, and DJ Aaron Axelsen spun tunes between sets.
I had trouble finding parking near Rickshaw Stop on a Friday night. I ended up driving around San Francisco playing the Interrupter’s new album Fight the Good Fight ALL THE WAY THROUGH before I found parking. Jeez. Eventually I just parked so far from the venue that I had to uber there if I stood any chance of actually seeing the Interrupters.
But I was too late to catch Stickup Kid. I’m not familiar with their music at all, so it was okay.
I haven’t really listened to much of Alt 105.3 since it changed from Live 105, so I was not at all familiar with the new morning show hosts, Elvis and DK, who introduced the band. I liked the old morning show. It was cringey but funny. I haven’t given these new guys a chance yet. Maybe one day.
I love the Interrupters. They’re so much fun. They’re ska punk, but without the horns, very reminiscent of Operation Ivy or some Rancid, but with a badass lady lead, Aimee Interrupter. I love her. I kept thinking all night watching her that she’s just so pretty and so awesome and commanding, and I want to be her when I grow up.
The rhythm section is twins, Jesse and Justin Bivona, and on guitar is their brother Kevin. The band got onto us for not being dressed up for Halloween (no one I could see there was).
“Punks are always dressed up anyway.”
The crowd was pretty wild. I got knocked way to the right and kinda stayed there the rest of the night. There were three people dancing with their arms around each other for a long time next to me. At one point, the girl closest to me grabbed onto me as well. She seemed nice. I felt included.
So I probably got some of this setlist wrong, it might be missing songs or be in the wrong order, but I know for a fact that the opening song was “A Friend Like Me,” and the closing song was “Family.” Before “Family,” they revisited the beginning of the set and played part of “A Friend Like Me” again.
“We’re out of the friendzone, now we’re Family!”
Another thing worth noting: Before playing a cover of Operation Ivy’s “Sound System,” (which is my favorite Operation Ivy song, and I love that they always seem to cover it live), Kevin said they were playing a cover of one of their favorite bands from the Bay Area, and then teased a bunch of random songs including Green Day’s “When I Come Around,” and a Rancid song that I can’t remember which one it was.
