My Future as a Sound Engineer
I have none. There is zero future for me as a record producer or sound engineer.
You may remember I was taking a class to learn more about this side of things. It just ended, so here’s my recap:
Despite being “musically challenged,” I’m the tour girl. I have real life experience and that DOES count for something, even if I can’t play an instrument and a lot of the producing concepts are over my head.
I’m the one who gets asked about band names and current music trends.
“Lindsay, have you heard anything like this that isn’t from the 80’s?”
“Some band names don’t sound like they match their music. I’m sure Lindsay can think of a few.”
I’m the one who knows how to get involved in a music scene, without actually being a part of it myself.
“How do you find out about local shows?”
“Well most of my friends are in local bands, so I just kinda go to their shows and hear about more from there…”
“But how do you know local bands?”
“…I have no idea.”
I’m pretty good at plugging cables into consoles. Bus and channel numbers, I gotchu fam. I can get that shit up and ready to record in under two minutes. (I know that’s not very good, but smile and nod along with me, please.)
I also learned a lot of valuable lingo so maybe now I can pretend like I actually know a thing or two about the music industry. Maybe I am more knowledgeable than the average fan. I also learned how to eq, which I’ve already discovered is super important. Recorded an interview while driving? Eq that shit to get rid of all the background noise and you’re golden.
So all in all was the class worth it? Yeah, I think so. It was fun and I like learning new things, especially about an industry I’m passionate about.
