Rancid Benefit Show for the Ohlhoff Recovery Center
I don’t think Rancid toured this year, at all if I remember correctly. But they did play a one-off show at the Regency in San Francisco to benefit the Ohlhoff Recovery Center.
My friend Javier’s band Deseos Primitivos opened. Rancid is his favorite band, so I’m sure that was super exciting. I was even excited about it for him. Also opening the show was Public Safety and The Faction.
Public Safety
I’m pretty sure they’re a Gilman band. I know Javier through the Gilman scene, and that’s where Rancid got their start, so I wouldn’t be surprised. I just thought I recognized the singer.
He intentionally rolled off the stage in front of the barricade during the last song??? Like… didn’t jump off, rolled off. That’s something I have never seen before.
But they were fun.
Deseos Primitivos
Javier’s band!
They have a lady vocalist, which is super cool, but unfortunately all I could really hear was the guitar. It was way too loud as compared to all the other instruments. I honestly couldn’t even tell if she was singing in Spanish or English.
Regardless. They were great.
The Faction
Apparently The Faction is a pretty legendary band from San Jose, and old friends of Rancid. I’d never heard of them, but they were good. They had a song about Coca Cola so they brought Lars, a Pepsi drinker, onstage to drink a Coke while they played it. It was wonderful.
Rancid
Ahhh Rancid. How I love them so. I started in about the second row right behind a woman front row center, but the minute they started playing and the pit got going, my feet were no longer on the ground. Those are the best shows.
I really love the feeling of being off my feet in the pit, just allowing the crowd around me to take care of me and hold me upright (if they so choose), but a guy with a 13 year old kid saw me struggling to stay afloat, grabbed me, and put me right in front of him next to his kid on the barricade so he could protect me there the whole show too. THANK YOU, KIND STRANGER! Much appreciated!
He did a killer job at it, too. It was an insane show, but I had plenty of space. Seriously, he made my night so much more enjoyable. He probably thought I was just a kid too, though. Oh well.
Some things that happened during this show:
*Lars talked about one song he plays with his kid, but his kid always tells him he doesn’t play it right. I can’t remember which song it was, but he even asked him up on the balcony when he finished playing it if he did it right that time. Cuuuuute.
*Tim’s dance moves, oh my god what a cutie
*“Addiction doesn’t care if you’re black, if you’re white, if you’re male, if you’re female, if you’re trans. It’s kinda like punk rock.”
*There was one girl who kept crowdsurfing and tried to jump back on top of the crowd, and was basically just being unnecessarily wild. She legit started punching one guy in the head and I did not understand why security didn’t just kick her out. It kept happening.
*Another girl shoved her way to the front, and she was pretty wild too. I saw her almost get in a fight after the show ended.
*It was basically just a really wild show all around. I love it, but people can suck sometimes.
*The girl next to me lost her glasses at one point.
Radio
This might just be my favorite Rancid song, and it’s such a good opener. Ugh all the feels.
Roots Radical
Journey to the End of the East Bay
So I had just recently made the decision to move from the East Bay to Brooklyn, NY. This show felt like such a goodbye to me. This was the first song that gave me that feeling, but Rancid is such an East Bay band, it was hard to shake it all night.
Maxwell Murder
11th Hour
The show’s barely started and they’re already playing so much And Out Come the Wolves… already, jeez.
Nihilism
I about died when I saw the setlist and how they spelled “Nihilism” wrong. Keep scrolling, you’ll see it.
East Bay Night
More East Bay songs, my poor heart. I love it here, I really do. I can’t imagine leaving. But… I am. I can’t really explain it, it’s just time.
Thanks for the reminder, Rancid.
Dead Bodies
FUCK YES I was SO stoked they played this. That’s a serious deep cut.
Black and Blue
Ghost of a Chance
Telegraph Ave.
-siiiiiiiigh- More East Bay songs.
Old Friend
Where I’m Going
Salvation
Bloodclot
Olympia, WA
Now THIS one almost made me cry because the lyrics are just so relevant. Being in New York and wishing you were somewhere else? Not Olympia for me, the East Bay… Why am I leaving?!
It’s Quite Alright
Lock, Step & Gone
Fall Back Down
I wish they’d play more off Indestructible honestly. This is probably my favorite of their albums.
Time Bomb
Apparently this is the song that really changed everything for them.
Ruby Soho
They didn’t encore at all, which was weird, but oh well.
Lars passed out setlists mostly just to kids in the crowd, which was cute. He crumpled a few up to throw to some kids in the balcony, and gave one to the 13 year old next to me.
