Will Wood and World Inferno

World Inferno was playing a show in Asbury Park, NJ, at the House of Independents with Will Wood opening. I had a DAY leading up to this show. Work 8am to 4pm, then I planned on going straight to Asbury from there, but I had a piece due for a website I write for (I am a legit writer elsewhere, believe it or not) due at 2pm, and I meant to wake up early enough to finish it before work, but I went to nap at 4am and accidentally slept til 7:30am, so I was late for work AND had to get an extension on the piece I was writing, so I had to come home after work, finish the piece, then get ready and HAUL ASS to Asbury.

All that to say, I was v late to this show.

I fucking RAN down the escalator at Penn Station and a girl gave me a hard time (“Use the stairs!”) but I didn’t even care, I made it on the train by a whole minute.

I came in while Will Wood was playing. I walked into the venue, heard music, and knew it had to be him because it was AWESOME and I know so many Infernites have been hyping him up so much. He def deserves the hype.

The venue was set up kinda strange. You walk in upstairs, then have to go downstairs like immediately to get to the pit/stage area. So I could hear Will Wood before I could see him, and I ended up right in front of the stage when I came downstairs.

I could not tell ya what songs he played, but I was 100% hooked, right off the bat. He was so so so fun.

A lot of people were there just for him and dancing a lot. He def brought his own fans, even though there was obviously a lot of overlap with Infernites.

I ended up buying all 3 of the CDs he had available at the end of the night.

Me: “Which one’s the best?”
Will: “$15 for all three and you don’t have to decide.”
Me: “…okay fine.”

Also:

Me: “I got here late so I only saw half your set but it was AWESOME. Also my friends are crazy about you.”
Will: “Oh I know your friends.”

Jack played drums for “Tattoos Fade” for like EVER before the song started.

Venue security: “You can’t bring all that confetti in here, or the band will get charged a $250 cleanup fee if you use it.”
Clay, Ben, and Brendan: “That’s fine, we’ll just pay it for them right now.”

It was a LOT of confetti.

Also I was pretty surprised to see Ben there. Apparently he’s touring with them.

I guess I should also mention this was the first night of a weeklong tour.

I saved my confetti for “Your Younger Man” but there was SO MUCH of it. There were also balloons.

We were T-rexes for “Naughty Little Rat.”

They originally ended the encore with “New Jersey” because New Jersey, but then Jack said he wanted to play more. Gina said she was feeling philosophical, so “Zen,” then “Me v Angry Mob.”

A pyramid was started, and I waited patiently behind them to climb on top, then security came up IMMEDIATELY when the second row started to tell them to get down. BOOOOOO why no fun allowed.

So instead, dudes got on the ground and rowed. That was funny af and super random and weird, but it’s to be expected with Inferno.

I had missed the last train out of Asbury for the night, so Margot and Doug drove me to another NJTransit stop near their house.
